Asiago

The largest plateau in Italy

– The smallest and brightest town of Italy –, is how the poet D’Annunzio defined this cultural and scenic heritage, a verdant bowl of unspoilt nature surrounded by mountains that have made history. And so rises from among the mountain ranges of the Vicenza region the largest plateau in Europe, “the plateau of the seven municipalities”, Asiago.

Full of history …

This land bears the indelible signs of a recent history of great artistic and cultural impact: the Great War is now a long ago memory that is still with us today, lost among the peaks but alive and tangible through the remains of thousands of trenches and fortifications, testimony collected in the museums and documented by very important archaeological sites.

Not just history, but also a deep-seated folklore echoes around the Vicentine Prealps. Local tradition is indeed made up of rituals and customs dating back thousands of years, with ancient and fanciful legends of gnomes, fairies and other woodland creatures attracting visitors from all over the world in an atmosphere of peace, magic and warm hospitality. These legends are kept alive by the inhabitants of Asiago whose origins it’s said can be traced back to the ancient Cimbri tribe that descended from the north.

… and Nature

Among the gentle slopes that surround it, the plateau lies in a perfect alternation of dense woods and green valleys. Over 2,000 metres high, the peaks rise majestically among pastures, lush forests of deciduous trees and conifers inhabited by animals of rare beauty under the watchful and ready eye of the Golden Eagle that dominates the skies above Asiago with all its regal elegance.

Splendid flowers co-exist in Italy’s most captivating plateau: martagon lily, daffodil, gentian, rhododendron, heather, edelweiss, carnation and dandelion to name but a few. The plateau has over 100 alpine pastures which, because of their extent and number, constitute the most important high-altitude pasture system in the entire Italian Alpine region.

An explosion of colours brings the valley alive, from the red and yellow of autumn to the white mantle of snow that covers everything in winter and the intense green of the summertime, creating a picturesque fairy-tale landscape, the perfect background for a wide variety of activities to engage in directly in contact with nature: trekking, mountain biking, horse riding, summer trips to the alpine meadows; cross-country and downhill skiing in winter.
