Schella Martz

The “Schella Martz” takes place during the last three days of February. Literally translated as “Sound March”, the tradition is an invitation to reawaken nature following the winter lethargy. Small processions of children make their way through the streets of the town districts and the town centre dragging lines of tins and bins tied together, hitting them with sticks to make as much noise as possible in order to awaken the imminent arrival of spring. On the final night, in the Town Hall square, an effigy of an “old lady” is burned which represents the old season now passed.
